The only uncertainty so far is funding from the Makana municipality to stage the title fight in Grahamstown.
Speaking to Grocott’s Mail, Bukelani Ndwayana said they are in advanced talks with the municipality and he is confident the fight will “definitely happen”.
If all goes according to the plan ‘Bhokoloshe’ will welcome the experienced Zolani Marali for the vacant welterweight title.
Marali holds the WBF light welterweight and has been in more battles than his Grahamstown counterpart.
He has a record of 29 fights, winning 24 of them with 13 of his victims kissing the dust.
Should the details of the fights be finalised in time for the scheduled date, this will be by far the biggest boxing occasion hosted at the multipurpose indoor sports centre.
The bout will be presented by a Cape Town promoter who the Ndwayana camp was not ready to name before the deal is finalised.
Ndwayana is currently being promoted by Welcome Ncita.
However, both Ncita and the Ndwayana camp are in agreement that should any other promoter approach them with a better deal, they are allowed to take it as long as it serves the best interest of the boxer.
For a long time Ndwayana has been on a mission to bring a title belt to Grahamstown, but suffered a setback with his loss against the reining SA welterweight champion Tsiko Mulovhedzi in East London last year.
The loss to Mulovhedzi was his first title fight in his 17-match career in which he won 13, losing two, with two draws.
The fight against Marali – known as Untouchable because of his slick movements – would be the biggest of his career.
But the man has been inactive for more than a year after coming off an unimpressive point’s decision against Kaizer Mabuza.
Although Ndwayana's last activity was a first round stoppage win, it’s not something worth celebrating as is was against a debutant Masixole Banzi five months ago.
