A group of young Grahamstown professionals saw the need to plough something back into the community. In the process Isixeko Sengcwele Development Initiative (ISDI) was born, an NPO that is determined to make a better living for underprivileged children.

After hosting a soccer tournament for 10 schools, the group’s latest philanthropy work was to supply school shoes to children in need.

The group contacted schools to help identify children who need shoes the most.

Both projects by the group and their upcoming projects are self-funded.

Secretary Mzikayise Toni says they are not looking to gain from the project; all they saw was the need to give back what they can to the community.

“We are still in the early stages of our project so we are not able to reach as many people as we hope we can at this stage.

For now we are just happy we are able to provide the shoes to these kids,” said Toni.

He says their main objective is to improve the socio-economic conditions of the youth, especially children in Grahamstown.

The NPO says it aims to achieve this through sport and education, working with interested parties and residents regardless of age, ethnic origin, ability, gender, belief or political affiliation.

Samuel Ntlebi, CM Vellem, DD Siwisa and Fikizolo primary schools were the lucky beneficiaries in this round of the goodwill by the group, who plan to launch their organisation in December and register later as an NGO.
