President Jacob Zuma will later this month launch a programme in Port Elizabeth to train about 15 000 artisans and plumbers.

The President said 3 000 trainees have made the list of first intakes recruited this financial year, who will fix leaking taps in their communities.

The recruitment process will be done through the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The President said this would stop the leaking of water which costs the country R7bn a year.

He briefed media on the progress made in implementing government's Programme of Action since his 2015 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February.

"Government has identified water as a critical resource for economic development and work continues to implement the five point plan for water and sanitation," the President said.

The plan entails maintainance and upgrading of existing water and sanitation infrastructure, building of new dams and developing of groundwater, improving water quality, developing SMART technologies for water and sanitation information management, and ensuring an enhanced and integrated regulatory regime, for example water use licensing. – SAnews.gov.za
