The national Council of Provinces will visit Makana on Monday 16 August. This will be the parliamentary body's second official visit to the municipality this year.

The national Council of Provinces will visit Makana on Monday 16 August. This will be the parliamentary body's second official visit to the municipality this year.

"This is an oversight visit by the NCOP to check how the department's intervention is doing," municpal spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo said.

"The last time NCOP visited the municipality was on 25 February this year.

"It will check the progress made by the intervention for the period of the past five months since they last visited here," said Ramokolo.

The visit was scheduled for Tuesday this week, but was changed at the last minute.

Ramokolo did not explain why the visit was rescheduled.

She said the NCOP would be focusing on the progress of the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) intervention in the municipality, better known as the administrative intervention.

Cogta MEC Fikile Xasa on 3 August introduced Jongisizwe Gomomo in a confidential special council meeting as the new administrator, succeeding Pam Yako.

There were rumours that the NCOP's visit concerned Gomomo's introduction as the new administrator.

A Council source said that by law, Xasa needs to inform the NCOP within 14 days of the appointment of an administrator.

"To my understanding there is nothing that has been reported to the NCOP regarding the introduction of Gomomo," said the source.

Gomomo told Grocott's Mail that the NCOP visit was a routine oversight matter.

During the NCOP's last visit earlier this year, the body declared Yako's appointment months before null and void.

They said Xasa had failed to follow the proper channels in informing the NCOP that his department had appointed an administrator.

A Council source yesterday (Thursday 13 August) said that as far as they knew, Gomomo's appointment had not been reported to Parliament.
