The Department of Science, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), in partnership with the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC), has opened new SAMRO offices in East London.

SAMRO – the South African Music Rights Organisation – was set up in 1961 to protect the rights of composers and authors.

Up until now, the only SAMRO office has been in Gauteng – which has meant that artists from all over the country have had to travel to Johannesburg to register and notify their songs.

The MEC of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Pemmy Majodina, says, “As government we shall continue with our endeavours to create an enabling environment for our artists.

Using our institutions such as ECAVC – and others – we shall strive with great passion to develop, support and empower our artists”.

Artists from all over the Eastern Cape will be able to use the SAMRO offices in East London free of charge.
