The third annual PennyPincher's Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) cycle race took place on Sunday (12 July) and saw over 500 riders get into the saddle at the start point at PennyPincher's warehouse in the industrial area.
The third annual PennyPincher's Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) cycle race took place on Sunday (12 July) and saw over 500 riders get into the saddle at the start point at PennyPincher's warehouse in the industrial area.
Most of them made it to the finish in the carpark at Rosehill Mall in Port Alfred.
Grocott's Mail was there to help them on their way with our water station situated 17kms from the start on the Southwell Road.
The race winner was Grahamstown’s Jason Meaton who made it three in a row. Meaton won the inaugural event in 2013 and followed this up with a win last year.
This year’s event was the closest finish yet, with a lead group of five riding together most of the way.
In the later stages of the race, this group dropped to three, before Meaton made his move with a few kilometres to go.
He finished in 1 hour 46 minutes 07 seconds, nine seconds ahead of second placed Heine Lategan.
The women’s winner was Olivia Reed who finished in 2:07:23, with Shannon Kirkhof second in 2:12:59.
Finishers at this year’s event had to content with windy conditions and a few muddy sections, all part of a great mountain bike race.
