Police have asked members of the public to assist in identifying a man hitch-hiking on the N2 between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth on Monday 13 July who died in a collision that also left a teenager with serious head injuries.

Traffic travelling west to Port Elizabeth from Grahamstown was diverted via Salem and Alexandria as emergency services closed off the road for three hours late Monday morning.

Grahamstown crime intelligence officer Captain Milanda Coetzer said a Nissan Livinia was travelling from Peddie towards Port Elizabeth and a Toyota Prado was travelling in the opposite direction when they collided.

She said there were five people in each vehicle. One of the occupants, a man, was declared dead at the scene.

"He was a passenger who had hitch-hiked in the Nissan Livinia," Coetzer said.

Coetzer said Paterson police had asked the public to help them identify the man.

Anyone with information should contact Captain Bernard Prince at 082 4168 708.

She said the driver of the Livinia, a 48-year-old woman, was diagnosed with a broken leg and other serious injuries and a woman approximately 55 years, who was in the Toyota Prado, was transferred to hospital in Port Elizabeth with back injuries.

Coetzer said a15-year-old girl with serious head injuries was airlifted to Greenacres hospital.

None of the other four people in the Prado were reported to have suffered any injuries.

"All emergency services were requested to respond to the accident," Coetzer said.

"The Paterson Fire department, Emergency Medical Services and Provincial Traffic Officers assisted in the accident."

In an additional twist, a truck transporting buffaloes jack-knifed close to the Nanaga Wild Life Estate while the road was still closed off.

"No one was injured in this incident, but the road remained closed until the vehicle could be moved.

No case docket was opened," said Coetzer.
