An elderly couple are in hospital after a gang attacked them last night on their farm at Salem 25km south-west of Grahamstown.
Grahamstown Crime Intelligence Officer Milanda Coetzer said, “In the early evening on Friday 10 July a panic button was received at Hi-Tec control room.
“The SAPS was informed and all responded.”

“The SAPS was informed and all responded.”
Coetzer said when the police arrived they found the 70 year old farmer and his 71 year old wife injured in their house on a farm close to Salem.
“An ambulance was dispatched to assist the man who had been beaten over the head by four men armed with blunt instruments,” Coetzer said.
“The woman was found to have been throttled and gagged and she was the one to have pushed the panic button.
“She reported that they had threatened her that they would cut her injured husband’s throat if she did not tell them where to find the firearms.”
However, the couple did not own any firearms, Coetzer said.
She said the men were seen leaving the farm in a white Nissan hardbody white with no canopy. The registration number is HBH029EC
The men made off with all the electronic goods on the farm, Coetzer said, including television and laptops. They also took the farm’s bakkie.
“Police are investigating a case of Farm Attack, House Robbery and Theft of motor vehicle, ” Coetzer said.
“The police wish to thank the Salem area farmers and all the departments who assisted the couple last night.”
