Police said the 67-year-old man died of natural causes at the Village Green shortly after midday.
"We are deeply sorry," said Festival media liaison Gilly Hemphill.
Captain Milanda Coetzer, SAPS area crime intelligence officer, said the man, whose name has not yet been released, had a massive heart attack. Coetzer is an SAPS representative on the Joint Operations Committee of the National Arts Festival.
Meanwhile police made two drunk driving arrests and arrested one person for drunk and disorderly behaviour during the first weekend of Festival.
Makana Traffic Department made two drunk driving arrests.
The Police Mounted Unit arrested a person on charges of drunk and disorderly behaviour in New Street on Saturday afternoon 4 July.
Coetzer said several cellphones had been stolen at the Village Green, as well as one or two at Church Square.
"These were split-second cases where people put their phones down, turned away, turned back and they were gone," Coetzer said.
And the Makana Parks Department has been kept busy removing cattle from city properties.
A Parks Department employee who was supervising the herding of around 20 cattle up the Cradock Road towards the municipal pound around 6.30pm on Sunday 5 July said it was the third herd that had been removed from city streets and properties.
"We brought first 11, then five up to the pound," said the employee, who asked not to be named.
