Archie Mbolekwa U13 soccer side will represent the Sarah Baartman District at the provincial football championships.

The side booked their spot in the provincial event after winning the Sarah Baartman Mega District Football Championships which took place in Graaff-Reinett on Saturday.

They came up against the Aberdeen representatives.

After the match ended in a 1-1 draw, it was down to penalties to determine the winner.

The Archie Mbolekwa side won the penalty shoot-out 3-1 to progress to the next round. Archie Mbolekwa captain, Nomtha Qwela said the side played well, although it was a hard game.

Qwela thanked her principal, Zola Mothlabane, and the team coach, Yivani Ncwadi, for helping them achieve their soccer goal.

“I’d like to thank God for giving us the strength,” added Qwela.

Ncwadi praised the young side, adding that most of the girls are in Grade 6 and 7, so many will still be part of the side next year.

This is the first competition Archie Mbolekwa have taken part in for years, due to the school not being able to make up a full team.

The provincial champs take place in August, which means the girls will be hard at training during the school holidays.
