Around 50 people dived into an icy Grey Dam outside Grahamstown at 7.30am on Sunday morning (21 June) in the 11th annual Polar Plunge to mark the Winter Solstice.
At the words "into the light" shouted from organiser, George Euvrard, everyone jumped in to the water – estimated to be about 9C in temperature.
Plungers and spectators alike were encouraged to bring blankets for those in need.
"We will be cold for a short while, others are cold all winter," said Euvrard.
The blankets were collected by Tim Dold of PG Glass, who were on hand at the finish with warming cups of hot chocolate for the swimmers.
Over 140 items of warmth were collected during the course of the event and these were handed over to the Roteract Club of Grahamstown Sunset on today (Tuesday 23 June).
President of the club, Sarah Southey, said they will distribute the blankets to various charity organisations who will make sure they will go to those who need it most.
