To commemorate the events of June 16 1976, the Albany Museum will be holding a special Youth Day event on Thursday morning.
To commemorate the events of June 16 1976, the Albany Museum will be holding a special Youth Day event on Thursday morning.
It will pick up the national Youth Month theme of "Youth taking South Africa forward", and there will be two guest speakers, both of whom have direct links to the 1976 unrest.
Mkhuseli Jack is now a business leader who led students in Port Elizabeth at the time of the Soweto uprisings.
He will be sharing his experiences of that period, as well as talking about youth participation in business and economic development.
Bonisile Nesi is an ANC MP and originally from Grahamstown.
He has first hand experience of 16 June. He will explore the role our youth can play in advancing South Africa's political development.
Museum staff will all be in school uniform and young people from local schools and youth structures as well as from Rhodes will be in the audience.
However, the event is open to anyone of any age who would like to come along.
Anyone attending is also invited to wear school uniform in honour of those children who lost their lives that day – and indeed all the children who sacrificed their education for the cause.
