The most rubbish-strewn part of Grahamstown is about to get a facelift. Tuesday 5 May will see a big clean-up of Sugar Loaf Hill and its surrounding areas.
The project is intended to encourage the local community and other public-spirited citizens concerned with the well-being of their environment to join in and make a difference.
At least 100 people are needed to help clear up the refuse that lies piled up across SUn City and Lavender Valley – and yesterday the number doubled after the Principal of Mary Waters High School, Faith Coetzee, agreed to send 100 of the school’s pupils to participate.
Most of the school’s pupils are from that area.
Makana Municipality, the SA Army, Police and NGOs will be present, as well as Ward 3 councillor, Marcelle Booysen.
Her ward committee will also be on hand to help.
“The aim is to encourage people to think differently,” said Tim Bull, one of the key organisers of the project.
The clean-up is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 5 May 2015.
The meeting point is the Waste Transit Site below Sugar Loaf Hill off the top end of Fitzroy Street (on the road leading towards Makana Brick Works.)
In the week leading up to the clean-up, organisers of the Sugar Loaf Hill clean-up will be going door to door to invite residents in the area to participate.
"The clean-up may be on only one day, but we hope residents will take the initiative further," said Bull.
The organisers hope the project will be the first of many.
"Once members of the community see the changes in the area, they may be motivated to tackle other polluted areas," Bull said.
