Brumbies Seconds were crowned champions of the Mayoral Cup as they beat Wanderers 17-8 in the tournament final.

The finals of the Mayoral Cup took place at the Miki Yili Stadium on Monday, with a full day of action leading up to the main event. The Round Robin fixtures began at the beginning of March, with the finals taking place in April.

In the first match of the day, the Winter Rose women’s side earned themselves the floating trophy as they beat Eastern Women 19-5.

The day also played host to two schools rugby fixtures. Nombulelo beat Ntsika 24-5 and Mary Waters beat Khutliso Daniels 47-0.

It was then the turn of the men’s clubs as Eastern and Lily White played for the third and fourth place play-offs.

Lily White were the eventual winners, beating Eastern 17-7.

It was then on to the main game of the day, as Brumbies Seconds took on Wanderers in the tournament final.

Brumbies were first to score soon after the whistle.

This gave Wanderers the wake-up call they needed as they fought back and did not let Brumbies take control of the game.

Brumbies added a further converted try to Wanderers, who replied with a penalty conversion and a try.

Brumbies led 12-8 at the half-time whistle. Brumbies added one more try in the second half to win 17-8.

For their effort, Brumbies won a floating trophy and each player earned a gold medal, while the Wanderers players each earned a silver medal.

Lily White won the bronze medals for their third-place win.

A number of the club players will be in action again this weekend, as the South Eastern District rugby trials take place at the Oval from 11am.
