Grahamstown Brumbies first rugby side emerged deserved 8-6 winners Gardens from Uitenhage on Saturday. The game was played on a wet Oval field, with downpours of rain throughout the game.

The match was an Eastern Province Super League Grand Challenge Cup match.

Saturday’s game saw the forwards take control in the wet conditions.

Brumbies scored the opening try within the first five minutes of the game.

Brumbies won a turnover in broken play that saw scrumhalf Angelo Frazer chip the ball.

He outsprinted the defence to score in the right-hand corner. Mains put over a penalty kick to take his side to a 8-0 lead.

The score stayed the same at the break.

Vincent Mains was accurate with his kicking, as usual, while winger Jamie Walters and full back Alexius Walters had good running phases.

Flanker Jason Potgieter and prop Deon Crous continued their consistent performances as they kept their side in the game at all times.

Gardens came back with two second half penalties to narrow matters 8-6.

Brumbies' defence was rock solid as the visitors launched wave after wave of attack near the Brumbies try line, in search for the winning try.

However, the Brumbies defence denied the visitors any chance of scoring.

Brumbies won 8-6.

Brumbies U21s lost 15-12 while the first reserves beat Gardens 20-8.

Chad Gill, Shanton Whitebooi and Lucius Jordaan scored tries for the first reserves.

Brumbies will face PE Police tomorrow in PE.
