Four Grahamstown cyclists are on their way to Windhoek in Namibia on mountain bikes, after leaving Grahamstown in the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend.
Four Grahamstown cyclists are on their way to Windhoek in Namibia on mountain bikes, after leaving Grahamstown in the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend.
The cyclists, Leslie van der Merwe and Ryan Palmer (both Round Table 11 members – Van der Merwe is chairman), Kirsti Still (schoolteacher and personal trainer) and Andrew Penney (MechAndrew cycle services) are scheduled to cross the border this weekend.
In total, the group will cycle a total distance of 1 900km, mainly on gravel roads, in three weeks.
Van der Merwe and Palmer will be attending a Round Table conference in Windhoek at the end of the cycle journey.
The four riders are being supported on their journey by Rose Palmer and Leanne van der Merwe, while MechAndrew technician Andrew Penney is maintaining the bikes.
Apart from attending the conference in Windhoek, the tour, Le Tour de Nartsa is also been used by the Round Tablers as a way of raising funds for the various charities they support.
The riders will cross the Karoo and Kalahari and are scheduled to reach Windhoek on 28 April for the conference.
The team will be hosted along the way by Round Table clubs.
The first day of the trip saw the cyclists cover the furthest distance of 146km.
By the end of today’s leg of the tour, which sees the team stay over in Upington, they would have covered over 750km.
