Police say no one has come forward to claim ownership of an abandoned Chevrolet Spark found engulfed in flames at Dundas Street on Tuesday.

Police say no one has come forward to claim ownership of an abandoned Chevrolet Spark found engulfed in flames at Dundas Street on Tuesday.

Port Alfred police spokesperson Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula told Grocott's Mail yesterday that an investigation into the matter has hit a snag.

"We tried tracing down the owner using the registration of the car and it led us to a Port Alfred address. When police got there it was just an empty field with no houses."

Mjekula said no case has been opened, since no one came forward and the car was towed to a police garage, where it remains.

Makana Fire Department Chief William Welkom said the station received a call at 4am about a car that had caught fire.

"My team responded quickly and put out the blaze within 10 minutes," Welkom said.

Members of the public who might have information are urged to contact the Grahamstown police.
