How many times have you cursed when you get to the supermarket because you've forgotten to bring your plastic shopping bags.

How many times have you cursed when you get to the supermarket because you've forgotten to bring your plastic shopping bags.

Or wondered in despair at the pile of plastic bags in your cupboard that is piling up for the same reason?

The St Andrew's College Environmental Club are keen to reduce the number of plastic bags putting the environment at risk – and to save you money.

To do this they have introduced a recycling bin for plastic bags in partnership with Pick n Pay.

At the entrance to the store in Pepper Grove Mall you’ll find the bin containing neatly folded plastic bags provided by customers who donate surplus bags, and anyone can help themselves when they turn up without bags.

The team asks you to please bring your bags back to the store and place them in the bin, and help yourself when you need a bag – either because you have run out or forgotten to bring your bags.

Teacher Jacques Pienaar will be pleased to set up a similar project with any other Grahamstown retailers who wish to offer their customers the same service.
