Res rugby at Rhodes University is alive and well. The Great Field saw an action-packed night of touch rugby in support of the Give 5 campaign recently.

Give 5 is a campaign which raises money to help relieve the financial pressures faced by some Rhodes University students.

The event for teams from the various residences was organised by a mixed Rhodes touch rugby side, Touch, who are also running touch rugby as an official sport at Rhodes for the first time this year.

Twelve teams participated, including two women's sides and the mixed Touch team. Every player contributed a minimum of R5 towards the Give 5 campaign.

The games were often fiercely contested, but played in a good spirit. Dylan Scott, a member of the Cullen Bowles House team, said, “It’s competitive but I think most people are quite friendly to one another because we all know each other.”

After an enthralling semi-final against Touch, Cory House ran out the overall winners of the event, beating De Beer’s by two tries to none in the final.

Head of Touch, Nandipha Mbangula, was pleased with the event despite some hiccups with the preliminary planning.

“In terms of organising teams and playing on time we did great; also having referees at the games and keeping score properly. I think we did great as a team as well.”

Overall the event was very successful and if that evening is anything to go by, it looks like the touch rugby season could be well worth watching.

The official inter-residence touch rugby competition will start in June and will run concurrently with the contact rugby season.

Matches will take place every Friday evening and each residence at Rhodes University will be able to enter at least one team.
