A hailstorm on Tuesday 10 March left several parts of Grahamstown without power, according to municipal officials.

Head of engineering and electricity at Makana Municipality, Mzomhle Radu, said only "far-flung" areas of the city were affected.

These included certain parts of the industrial area, Strowan kaolin mine and Strowan Farm.

Seven households in the area were also affected by the two-hour outage.

“Power is always vulnerable during storms because it can be short-circuited by the lightest of contact with the power lines.

"It trips even when winds blow and cause the cables to touch each other, or when debris from the ground flies up and hit the cables," Radu said.

Makana Municipality also received complaints of power outages from Hooggenoeg and Vergenoeg.

“It took two hours for the electricians to restore power to the affected areas,” Radu said.
