At least one lane on the N2 freeway had to be closed off after a truck carrying beer lost its load on Saturday 28 February.

Chief of Makana Fire Department William Welkom said no one was injured in the incident.

"The incident happened near the Pop-In intersection to Salem," Welkom said. According to Welkom the truck was dumping crates of beer as it travelled towards Grahamstown from Port Elizabeth.

"I don't know how the driver failed to notice that his truck was losing its load," Welkom said.

Passing motorists stopped and helped themselves to the truck's stock before police arrived to salvage what was left.

Police are reportedly looking for the driver of the truck.

According to an unconfirmed report, he disappeared on his way to make a statement at the police station.

In another incident, a truck overturned near Waainek Prison this morning.

According to Welkom the driver seemed to have lost control of the truck.

"It veered off the road and flipped on to its side," Welkom said.

Neither Grahamstown police spokesperson was available for comment.
