Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula told Grocott’s Mail that the two trucks – one a big truck with a trailer and a mini truck – were both on route to Port Elizabeth when the driver of the big truck lost control of the vehicle.
“The trailer of the big truck then swerved into the middle of the road; then it crashed with the mini truck which was also on its way to PE," Mjekula said.
Two of the three people in the mini truck died on the scene and the third occupant, the driver, was injured and rushed to hospital. "Police and traffic officers were at the scene and the road had to be closed for a couple of hours,” said Mjekula.
He told Grocott’s Mail that the accident happened around 4am on Saturday 14 February and police are still investigating the cause.
“Two cases of culpable homicide will be investigated. Names of the deceased have not been released as the families have not been informed yet,” Mjekula said.
He said one lane has now been opened on the N2 towards Port Elizabeth, but the rest of the road is still closed, as police are still clearing the scene.
