Upstart Youth Development Project (Upstart) Fingo Festival and the PUKU Children’s Literature Foundation will be holding a big clean up at Fingo Village (16 February 2015), Joza location (17 February 2015) and Extension 6 location (18 February 2015) from 3pm-4.30pm

In a media release, Upstart said they are committed to providing educational opportunities through which Grahamstown youth can develop personally and increase their ability to become agents of change for their communities.

"The 2015 Upstart cohort (ranging in age from between 13 to 19 years old) will pick up litter in order to encourage local residents to get active and to keep their local area clean and tidy," the statement said. "Each clean up session will feature poetry acts and music."

Upstart’s Acting Director, Belinda Kholeka Shange said, “Community engagement is one of our core pillars as an organisation. What better way to begin the year than to start by embracing the communities we reside in?

"There is power in bringing about change in your own environment. We look forward to the upcoming three days of fun and community service.”

For more information on Upstart Youth Development Project, contact Upstart's Acting Director: Belinda Shange on

About Upstart:
Upstart is a youth development project based in Grahamstown, which provides opportunities for high school learners with limited access to resources to participate in a variety of media orientated programmes and activities. Since its pilot project in 2008-2009, Upstart has expanded rapidly as it has sought to respond to low literacy levels among learners. Unavoidably, it has also needed to respond to other problems affecting learners. Upstart recently won the Sanlam/MDDA prize for Best Front Pages: Community/Grassroots Media. In awarding the prize, the judge stated that Upstart truly understood their constituency and applauded the consistency of the standard of the front pages. http://upstartydp.org

About PUKU
The Puku Children’s Literature Foundation (Puku) aims to develop dynamic and innovative programmes and projects to improve the quality and quantity of children’s books and educational materials in all Southern African languages. Puku’s flagship project is the puku.co.za website which went live online in October 2009. It is the first multilingual resource on African children’s literature. Puku has been the driving force behind the creation and implementation of Puku Story Festivals in Grahamstown since 2013. Implemented in partnership with the National Arts Festival and African Studies Department of Rhodes University, these annual festivals aim to facilitate access to literature and educational/recreational materials in isiXhosa
