Having notched up 30 years’ service, Peter Meyer will retire from GBS Mutual Bank at the end of January, a period which saw him hold various positions and gain invaluable experience in several divisions of the financial institution.
Having notched up 30 years’ service, Peter Meyer will retire from GBS Mutual Bank at the end of January, a period which saw him hold various positions and gain invaluable experience in several divisions of the financial institution.
Meyer started working at the then Grahamstown Building Society in 1985, and initially gained experience and knowledge in investments, bonds, savings and foreign exchange, as well as working in the accounts department. He has held his current position as Business Development Officer for 25 years.
During his tenure at Grahamstown Building Society and GBS Mutual Bank, Meyer has served under five managing directors – Joe Keeton, Jim Reynolds, Winston Riddin, Tom Tagg and Anton Vorster – and alongside numerous colleagues whom he says he will remember with a sense of fondness.
In the 30 years Meyer has been employed at the institution, there were just three Chairmen of the Board – Kyle and later Chris Stone and the current Chair, Tom Tagg.
Born and bred in Grahamstown, Meyer matriculated from Graeme College in 1974 and joined the SA Permanent Building Society and EP Building Society for short spells.
In 1984 he was persuaded by his father Doug Meyer, already an institution at Grahamstown Building Society, to join the ‘local bank’ that had its headquarters in Grahamstown.
After working alongside his father for five years, Meyer took over his father’s client base after the latter retired, and continued to provide excellent service to GBS clients in Grahamstown and Port Alfred for the next 30 years.
Managing Director Anton Vorster said Meyer had helped the bank achieve the success it has had in both Grahamstown and Port Alfred, and he will be missed by his numerous clients.
“Clients and staff alike will miss his knowledge and friendly nature,” said Vorster. Meyer will be joining his wife Gill at Stewart Armitage Estates, in Church Square.
