A trail of blood led him to their mother's body, outside.
Grahamstown Police spokesperson captain Milanda Coetzer said police were awaiting the result of a post-mortem in the murder and alleged rape of the 35-year-old Grahamstown woman.
Coetzer said the woman was found dead at her home by the father of her two children.
"No sign of forced entry was found at the house and the two children were asleep when their mother was found," Coetzer said.
The woman lived in the house with her two young children, believed to be under 5 years old.
Tenant in the back-yard cottage Nobonke Singaphi told Grocott's Mail she was awoken around 6am on Saturday by the children's alarmed father.
Singaphi said he lived in Joza and stopped by at the house every morning to greet the children on his way to work.
She said the man had been surprised to see the door to the house open and the children fast asleep, alone.
"We then saw blood and we followed the trail of blood leading us outside.
She was lying near the fence of the yard." Singaphi said she'd heard nothing unusual on Friday 23 January.
The attack is believed to have happened that night. "I couldn't sleep that Saturday night, thinking about it," Singaphi said.
Coetzer said the suspects remained at large.
"Police are waiting for the result of the post mortem and ongoing investigation will determine whether further charges should be added to that of the murder charge," Coetzer said.
