A member of the Grahamstown K9 Unit faces two counts of theft after he was arrested for allegedly stealing items worth approximately R350 at a local supermarket around midday on Wednesday 14 January.

The officer, whose name is known to Grocott's Mail, was arrested by members of a local security company shortly after the incident, according to police.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed the incident and said the officer faced two counts of theft.

The police officer is a member of the provincial K9 Unit, stationed in Grahamstown.

He was arrested in connection with the first incident and also faces another count of theft in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident late on Tuesday 13 January.

He remains in police custody. Govender said details of the incidents were still sketchy.

The police officer in question is a Warrant Officer in the provincial K9 Unit. More on Friday's edition of Grocott's Mail.
