DSG pupils Jess Wright and Courtney Repinz have both won medals at the National School Sport Championships in Pretoria that finished today 15 December.

The championships were hosted by the Department of Sport and Recreation over five days.

Jess Wright was part of the Eastern Province relay team that won bronze in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Jess was also part of the 4 x 100 freestyle relay, which also won bronze.

Courtney Repinz received two bronze medals, one for the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and one for the medley relay. On their way to winning bronze in the medley relay, the EP side (Courtney Repinz, Jamie Bulbring, Alexia Young and Megan Hortan) also set an Eastern Province record, breaking the old record by over three seconds.

Courtney also made the finals of the 100m butterfly and the 400m freestyle, finishing fourth overall in the butterfly and fifth in the freestyle.

The championships hosted more than 10 000 pupils from all over the country.

Also represented at the championships from Grahamstown were learners from Kuyasa Special School. The Kuyasa pupils were part of the EP soccer, netball, basketball and cross-country sides.

Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who described the championship as the bedrock of the country’s sport development, said that all the country’s 27 000 schools should play sport every Wednesday in the 2015 academic year.

The sporting codes at this year’s championships include athletics (cross-country), basketball, chess, cricket, football, gymnastics, goalball, netball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, hockey and rugby, as well as the indigenous games jukskei, kgati, khokho and morabaraba.

The matches of the championship, themed ‘Today’s athletes, tomorrow’s legends’, were played at 23 venues around the City of Tshwane, with the main centre being the University of Pretoria.

The inaugural National School Sport Championship was staged in 2012 in Pretoria. Last year, the competition was held in Bloemfontein.
