Makana Municipality councillors were stunned by the dramatic last-minute addition of Dr Iain L'Ange's name on the list of candidates to be considered for the audit and risk committee.
This audit and risk committee is set to serve as an independent governance structure and an advisory body that will advise the council, the political office-bearers, the accounting officer and the management staff of the municipality on matters relating to internal financial controls and internal audit and risk management.
L'Ange's name shocked councillors when it appeared on the list of candidates as he is the Executive Director of Infrastructure, Finance & Operations at Rhodes University. He also holds an MBA, PhD in Business Administration & Contemporary Spirituality.
Councillor Brian Fargher vocalised the shock when the item was being discussed, asking for an explanation as to "how the name of L'Ange was added into the list when on the original agenda it was not present?"
At the Ordinary council meeting 4 December, Fargher exclaimed at the fact that Mawonga Deliwe, whom he considers the more suitable candidate because he has the right qualification and experience, was suddenly bumped into fourth place by a person who is a "theologian".
L'Ange was then dropped from the list, even though his was the first name on the agenda. L'Ange was not available to comment on how his name got on the list and why it was then dropped.
Fargher told Grocott's Mail that the only explanation was a political oversight because no one had explained how a name that was not listed in the first draft suddenly topped the list.
The audit and risk committee, which is set to play an important role in the overseeing of municipal activities, was then chosen. Tembela Mnqeta is chairperson and Deliwe, Fungai Hluyo Mushoshwe and Ingrid Kriel are committee members.
