Eskom released its 302nd update on the state of the power system Thursday 4 December, saying the system is exceptionally constrained due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations.

It mentioned depleted water reserves and logistical issues relating to diesel supplies at their peaking power stations.

Eskom implemented Stage 2 load shedding Thursday. Sipho Neke at Eskom’s media desk told Grocott’s Mail on Thursday that the electricity system will remain constrained Friday and the risk of load shedding remains high.

Eskom has also taken a decision to load shed over the weekend in order to build up reserves for the week ahead. The capacity available to meet demand for electricity will be reduced as a result.

Eskom calls on all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly by “Living Lightly” this summer.

Eskom’s system status bulletin is released twice a week in line with its commitment to regular and transparent communication on the power system, which is expected to be constrained for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Rhodes University and surrounding areas served by the RU2 station experienced power cuts on Tuesday December 2 for five hours and again on Wednesday. Eskom's load shedding schedule is at: bit.ly/125apiF
