The municipality is trying to ascertain which construction company's vehicle destroyed a sign at the entrance to Douglas Dam near the Grahamstown off ramp on the N2 on Monday 1 December.

The vehicle, belonging to an unknown construction company, damaged a map sign board of Grahamstown after filling a tank with water from Douglas Dam.

According to Jerry Gush, who posted pictures of the damaged sign on Facebook, the truck "rolled back on to the sign in the photo and left it broken like that”.

Makana spokesperson Yoliswa Ramkolo Wednesday told Grocott’s Mail the municipality had no knowledge of the incident. However, she admitted that construction companies often use dams to get water and that they were actually damaging water pipes and leaving them to the municipality to fix.

“These companies get permission from the municipality to suck water from local dams because many of them are employed by the municipality for certain projects,” Ramkolo said.

Ramkolo said the damaged sign was being looked into and that the department of infrastructure was going to make sure it gets fixed.

“It is really frustrating because the least these people can do is report any damage they cause to the municipality so that it can be attended to,” she said.

Makana is looking into ways to ensure these incidences do not continue and urges members of the public to come forward with information when they see public property ruined, Ramkolo said.
