Gareth Burger scooped Player of the Year, the most prestigious award at the Grahamstown Brumbies Rugby & Netball club annual awards dinner at last Friday.

Aldy Meyer, the former president and founding member of Brumbies, was the keynote speaker at the event that saw the club celebrate its 15th anniversary. Kevin Luiters, the current EP Kings contracted player, was a guest speaker.

"You must never stop dreaming and as a professional player, you need to sacrifice, be disciplined, be committed and work extremely hard to reached the top,'' Luiters said.

After seeing the players in action during the club’s community rugby day recently, he came away convinced that Brumbies is filled with talented players.

Meyer motivated the players and congratulated the club on their outstanding achievements since 2000. He praised the hard-working club executive and encouraged them not to give up on keeping the club on top. He said it was difficult to step down from the club due to his commitment as acting president of EPRU and Southern Kings Franchise chairperson.

"But it was because and through the Brumbies that I achieved all that and could be elected at that top position," Meyer said.

"I am forever grateful for what the Brumbies meant to me. Brumbies is without doubt one of the most successful and talented clubs in EP." Burger, who received the Player of the Year award, is the club captain and also served on the executive as the players' representative.

He is disciplined on and off the field and was one of the most consistent performers during the season. The netball Player of the Year went to Sherniqa Fillis, while the Rugby Players' Player of the Year went to Graeme College pupil Angelo Frazer, who also represented EP Senior Country Districts team this year.

The Supporters' Player of the Year went to Joe Mqubuli, who also scored the Most Tries. Jason Potgieter received the President's Award, which the club president presented to Potgieter for his all round performance, commitment and dedication. In his address, Giuliano Flotman congratulated the winners and thanked everyone including the sponsors for their contribution towards the success of the evening.
