A resident of the Mayfield housing development escaped unharmed from his burning home last weekend, thanks to his neighbours.
On Saturday 25 October residents of the newly built Mayfield houses were alarmed by heavy smoke coming out of a neighbour’s house.
When they learned that the owner was inside, the crowd started banging on doors and windows until the sleeping man woke up.
December Fana, who lives opposite, said some resident were getting water from their houses to extinguish the fire.
The owner, known only by his clan name Mpondo, escaped unharmed, but some of his furniture in the dining room and kitchen was badly burnt and the house was filled with smoke.
Mpondo told them he didn't know what had caused the fire because he hadn't been cooking. Grocott's Mail visited the house, but Mpondo was out.
However, smoke marks were visible around two windows. A burnt fridge and wall unit were outside.
Fire Chief William Welkom said the Fire department responded to a call from one of the residents about 8pm.
"When the team got to the house the neighbours had already extinguished the fire," Welkom told Grocott's Mail Thursday 30 October.
He said the house was mostly smoke damaged and confirmed that everything in the sitting room was burnt.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
