A man who hit two vehicles on the N2 before he crashed the new Mercedes Benz C-Class he was test driving is under mental assessment at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in Grahamstown.

Police spokesperson Captain John Fobian told Grocott’s Mail on Wednesday October 29 that police are investigating two counts of reckless and negligent driving on the N2 between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

The suspect first hit a car near Nanaga, forcing it off the highway and leaving a woman and child with minor injuries, Fobian said, adding that they were on their way to Grahamstown when the accident occurred.

“After forcing a car out of the road the man drove off,” Fobian said. He said the man then hit another vehicle near Seven Fountains, after which the Mercedes Benz went out of control and overturned.

“It appears that the driver fled after the crash and left a passenger in the vehicle seriously injured,” Fobian said.

"We found out that the suspect booked himself at the Fort England hospital where he is undergoing mental treatment,” Fobian said.

Fobian said on Thursday 30 October that police are still investigating the incidents and are taking statements in Grahamstown and Nanaga.
