Natalie Ross and Cody van Wyk were crowned Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year at the Rhodes University Sports Awards Dinner.

Ross is a member of the Athletics Club at Rhodes and Van Wyk a member of the hockey club. Both have made headlines in the Grocott's Mail numerous times throughout the year.

The sports awards were Friday 17 October in the Monument, where the sporting clubs and individual performances were awarded.

Ross finished third in the 2014 Pontevedra ITU Duathlon World Championships in Spain, winning the championship bronze medal.

This is the third time she has won the Sportswoman of the Year award, the last time was in 2013 when she won gold in the world triathlon championships.

Van Wyk was selected for the South African U18 A hockey side, which took part in the youth Olympics this year.

The sports awards were attended by invited guests, including Rhodes staff and students.

Sports journalist Graeme Joffe was the guest speaker.

Van Wyk said he was “overwhelmed” at the announcement of him being named the Sportsman of the Year. While he worked hard on his hockey throughout the year, he said he did not to expect the award as he came up against some tough competition. He plans to work towards the award again next year, although he is in a different age group.

This year he was part of the U19 side and next year he jumps up to the U21 age group.
