A group of learners from St Mary's Primary school in Grahamstown spent their Saturday morning at school having fun with Maths activities together with their parents.
Around thirty learners gathered at the school for the Maths Fun Day organised by the St Mary's development care centre. This day was meant to give learners a chance in sharpening their Mathematics skills.
Grocott's Mail spoke to Karen May who is a co-ordinator of the centre at the fun day. May explained that learners need the support of their parents in order to be confident with their Maths skills.
She said this Maths fun day is also a way for parents to bond with their children while they learn.
"In the community we do not have confident parents who can help their kids with maths; we use this day to also teach parents the basics of maths," May said.
Parents who attended the fun day also did activities in support of their children. One of the parents, Eunice De-klerk, told Grocott's Mail that the project has helped her to bond with her children more.
"We are able to see our children’s' strengths and weaknesses in maths now, and we are also taught how we can help them improve," De-Klerk said.
The fun day was also attended by Debbie Stott who works for the South African Numeracy project says.
"It is an honour to be a part of the Maths fun day. We facilitate the event and we bring the activities to be done for the day. Learners must have fun when doing maths especially with their families," Stott said, adding that this was a third they have been assisting the school with Maths activities.
May added that the centre also has a support group for parents and learners where they share their problems when it comes to helping their children with Maths.
