There are only two weeks left to nominate worthy souls for the Grahamstown Grocott's Citizen of the Year award.

When making your nominations, keep in mind that the award seeks to recognise citizens who go the extra mile for their community in six different categories–Arts and Culture, Business, Community Service, Education and Training, Environment Conservation and Tourism, and Sport.

"We'd like to remind Grahamstown citizens to put forward special people in the town who are serving the community beyond the call of duty," said organiser Debbie Smuts of Grahamstown Sunset Rotary Club.

The closing date for nominations is 24 October and forms are available at Jenny Gopal Optometrists, Albany Sports, PG Glass, Albany Computers and Pick 'n Pay or you can request a copy online at: ghtcoty@gmail.com.

In 2013, the award was shared by Melanie Lancaster, principal of the GADRA Matric School for 16 years, and Ben Bezuidenhout, who was nominated in the Community Service category for his energetic fundraising efforts for the elderly at Somerset Place.

The Citizen of the Year Award was started in 2000 to recognise and honour local citizens who are examples of the Rotary maxim “Service Above Self”.

Nominations come from the general public, and the award is made annually to someone who is selected by a panel of former Citizens of the Year.

Criteria for nomination include the following–someone who creates a sense of civic pride in the citizens of the town; someone who serves the community selflessly and without thought of reward; someone who inspires us with their courage and determination; someone who improves the quality of life of others by giving service above and beyond the call of duty, in any walk of life; someone who has achieved an extraordinary success, and brought honour to our town.

"We're hoping to get lots more nominations in before the closing date," Smuts said.

The Grahamstown Grocott's Citizen of the Year will be announced at a dinner at the Monument Restaurant on 21 November.
