A massive raw sewage spill behind Buco hardware store has sparked fresh fears of water-borne diseases.

Floor manager at Buco, Nico Olivier said the stench is unbearable and is making work difficult for the workers at the offloading zone behind the building.

"I personally reported the matter to the municipality but still there's this sewarage running here," he said.

According to Olivier the store's assistant manager reported the matter seven times to the municipality, once returning with a municipal health inspector.

"The municipality came after that and worked on the drain, but left it halfway," he said. Earlier this year, CEO of Fort England Psychiatric Hospital Dr Roger Walsh, warned that the sewage puring into Grahamstown's river systems is an environmental health time bomb.

He warned that an outbreak similar to the one in which three children in Bloemhof died this year could happen here.

Three babies died in the North West township after coming into contact with sewage-contaminated water in the Vaal River.
