Bad weather in Port Alfred has put a temporary hold on the annual Mutual & Federal Universities Boat Race on the Kowie River.
The Universities Boat Race is a contest between South African university rowing teams, who compete in a series of crew-versus-crew duels in the men’s and women’s categories.
Recent events have also seen the Boat Race being used as a platform to groom novice rowers mainstream events.
University rowing crews taking part in the 2014 edition of the Boat Race include Rhodes University, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), University of Pretoria (Tuks) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
Mandla Gagayi, head of sport at Rhodes University Sports Administration, said event on Friday 19 September had come to a halt here because of bad weather.
Gagayi confirmed that races scheduled for today were postponed to Saturday 20 September, starting at 6am.
Gagayi said scheduling of the remainder of the Boat Race finals, including the A and B finals, were still to be confirmed.
