With less than three weeks until the 2nd Legends Marathon, the organisers’ have announced a drive to attract and register local athletes.

In order to encourage local athletes to participate en masse, the organisers have decided that over and above the R1m prize money, R30 000 will be awarded exclusively to the top five male and female finishers from the province in the Legends Ultra Marathon.

Each participant will be able to run for their own cause in the 68km event, which starts at the Bhisho Stadium and ends at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London.

Registration is R210 for the 68km race and R90 for the 21.1km half-marathon.

The registration deadline for the half marathon is Monday, 29 September.

The registration drive will take place in Grahamstown on Friday 26 September at the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) offices on the corner of African and Milner Streets from 3pm.

Athletes may enter for the 21km at the registration drive, but entries for the 68km close on 24 September.

The organisers will also hold a drive in Alice, Butterworth, Umtata, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, from 16 to 22 September.

All finishers will qualify for a medal and a T-shirt. The event will be staged under the banner of the Real Gijimas Athletics Club.

The Legends Marathon is sponsored by DSRAC and the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board. This year’s race will be timed by well-known timing and results company, ChampionChip, who will also provide online registrations and full results after the race.

Doping tests will be conducted by Drug Free Sport SA.

Hostel accommodation and transport to the start is available.
