An Extension 8 man who was arrested for possession of mandrax was sentenced to two years direct imprisonment last week in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court.

Luvuyo Thembani appeared in court last week, after he was arrested for being in possession of mandrax tablets at his home on August 21.

The Extension 8 man pleaded guilty to the charges on Thursday last week.

Thembani's lawyer read out an affidavit in court stating that three policeman arrived at his Joza home together with a friend of his and found a number of mandrax tablets which amounted to R500 on the table.

He was then arrested on the spot. Thembani acknowledged to the court that he knew what he was doing was illegal according to South African law and pleaded guilty to being found in possession of the drugs.

In the affidavit he pleaded with the court to be sympathetic towards him as he had pleaded guilty to all charges and did not waste the court's time.

Thembani was out on bail when he appeared in court; he was sentenced by magistrate Nomnikelo Jebese on September 11.

Jebese sentenced Thembani to 24 months direct imprisonment and six months suspended for three years.

Thembani is expected be in court again on other charges on September 26.
