Frightened Joza residents were flung into darkness last night, following an explosion.

Phumlani residents reported hearing a loud bang, followed by a bright flash, around 7pm.

According to a resident, a street light "exploded". The pole supporting it made a noise like a car engine, shortly before all the lights in the area went out, said the resident, who declined to be named.

Eskom spokesperson Zama Mpondwana said Eskom technicians had been working on the line shortly before the outage.

Mpondwana said they were working on the Albany/Rini 22kV line that provides electricity to Grahamstown on Tuesday, 16 September 2014.

"The breaker tripped due to overloading, during the change-over period from Mimosa back to Albany/Rini," Mpondwana said. He said the situation was quickly normalised and customers' power supply was back-fed through the Mimosa 22kV line.

However, Mpondwana said Eskom was not aware of any report of a street light exploding.
