With a deep breath I opened my eyes and check my phone.

With a deep breath I opened my eyes and check my phone.

I begin taking in the vast amounts of data I encounter every day.

The first piece of information encountered was that found on the Al Jazeera website.

Eyes still groggy with sleep, I open the webpage and attempt to stay up-to-date with the happenings of the outside world.

Perusing through the mayhem of the modern age, as is recorded on the news site, it becomes apparent that International Literacy Day is once more upon us.

This and an array of other information securely enclosed in the back of my mind, I set out to begin the day.

The time checked, the slogan on the cereal box read, I head to Groccott’s Mail to meet with the team and decide what information we would like to release to the rest of Grahamstown today.

What different turns and twists would the day have taken but for the ability to process this information? What if there was no such thing as being literate?

Granted that almost all activities involve the processing of information, it is literally astounding how many people take for granted this necessary skill.

Just remember: stay calm and keep reading.
