A series of unfortunate events nearly ruined the day for Makana football lovers who were looking forward to the kick off of this year’s Makana Local Football Association Top 8 Knockout Competition Saturday 30 August at the Rhodes University Prospect Fields.

The problems resulted from the careless handling of the registration of clubs taking part in the competition, which meant that three matches scheduled to take place could not kick off because they could not provide the proof that they registered and paid to take part in the competition.

Another team pitched up late. In the premier division, XI Attackers enjoyed a walkover as Callies arrived late for their fixture.

Makana Pillars dismantled Jacaranda Aces 6-2 while Young Killers enjoyed an easy ride as they brushed aside Pioneers 5-3.

Linge Stars also produced a 5-3 win, over Santos, in the last game of the premier division section of the competition.

The first division was the one heavily hit with the club registration fiasco as only one of the four scheduled matches took place.

Rhodes prevailed 2-1 against Golden Brothers, while other matches were walkovers.

Future Stars, Shining Stars and United Aces enjoyed easy rides into the semis against Green Leaves, Hellenic and Makana Celtic respectively.

Tomorrow 6 September will see the first round winners taking part in the semi-final matches at the Rhodes Prospect Fields.

The winners of the semi-finals will meet in the competitions finals scheduled for Saturday 13 September.
