Hundreds of students are expected to walk away with their hard-earned certificates when the East Cape Midlands College (EMC) holds its annual Diploma Ceremony at the Uitenhage Sports Centre on 3 October.

Rhodes History lecturer Nomalanga Mkhize will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony, which will see students from the six campuses receive Diploma certificates in disciplines including Human Resources Management, Marketing, Office Administration, Finance, Economics and Accounting, Tourism and Information Technology.

Nomfusi Ntsho, deputy campus manager for the Grahamstown campus, said that she expects that this year’s ceremony is expected to have more graduates than previous years as "the college has embarked on a massive increase in its annual student intake”.

The certificates will be awarded to Exit Level students who have completed their National Certificate Vocational or Report 191. After consultation with the Department of Education, they will be upgraded to Diploma level.

“Exit level students are those that have spent at least 18 months after completing their studies in intern positions, community engagement, or active participation in any job related to their studies,” Ntsho said.

“Four students from the campus managed to make it to the 2013 National List of Top Achievers, which draws from about 50 colleges across the whole of South Africa,” Augusta de Jager, deputy campus manager, said.

“Of particular interest was Thuliswa Mapu, who managed to make it to the nationals top 10 in six of her courses,” de Jager said.

Two weeks ago, more than 800 students from the Grahamstown campus received their NCV and Report 191 certificates at a ceremony at the City Hall.
