Grahamstown briefly forgot its troubles as the soldiers of the 6 South African Infantry Battalion (6 SAI) presented an exciting display of marching, music and equipment through the city's streets on Thursday 28 August.

Executive Mayor Zamuxolo Peter praised the soldiers of 6SAI Battalion for their commitment to ensuring that the African continent is kept at peace.

The Mayor was speaking at the parade ceremony held at Church Square this morning, welcoming back the 6 SAI soldiers who had been deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 14 months.

"As Makana and the citizens of Grahamstown, we are delighted to welcome home the brave soldiers who went on a peace-keeping misson [to the]DRC," said Peter. Peter emphasised that the parade was a historical moment to cherish and remember.

"We honour the soldiers who risked their lives. They deserve medals for bravery," said Peter. He also said that it is a blessing that none of the soldiers were killed while in the DRC.

The parade began with the band troop marching in front of the City Hall. Residents came out in numbers to bid their warm welcome and appreciation to 6 SAI. Concluding the parade Peter encouraged the South African National Defence Force to keep serving the country and the continent in such a dedicated fashion.
