Grocott’s Mail is currently undertaking changes in staff and location. Along with the move to a new building on 1 September, they have also hired a new general manager, Greg Stewart, former publisher of the Citizen Newspaper.

Stewart brings with him extensive knowledge and experience as he has worked as a publisher for eleven years in the newspaper industry. He not only sees Grocott’s Mail as a meaningful institution within the community, but also as a successful business establishment with a rich history.

Although Stewart only started at Grocott’s at the beginning of this month, he already has exciting plans for the newspaper. His plans are to diversify Grocott’s Mail by focusing on other forms of media such as online and mobile media.

“My plan is to build the business and clearly define it so that it can grow to become a sustainable entity” said Stewart.

The new general manager emphasised the fact that he will make sure that Grocott’s Mail remains a valuable part of the community despite the challenges it faces. Talking about the new offices that the newspaper will be occupying from the beginning of September, the paper’s marketing and business manager, Ronel Bowles said the move came about when the owner of the building sold the building.

“The other reason for the move, is that since our editorial staff moved to Rhodes University, the building just became too big, so we had to move to a smaller building”.

Stewart said he is excited about his new move to the Grocott’s Mail but acknowledges the challenges he will face.

“The newspaper industry is under great pressure, but people are taking steps to change and evolve with those changes”.
