A Bonsmara bull was sold for an Eastern Cape record price of R180 000 at the Frontier Bonsmara auction on Wednesday 20 August.

The bull, bred by Eastern Cape farmer JJ Park, was bought by Nick Serfontein of Sernick Bonsmaras from Kroonstad.

The auction at the Hobson & Co auction yard, saw a total of 62 bulls on offer selling for an average of R40 935 – another record. Another bull, also bred by JJ Park fetched a staggering R150 000. The bull was sold to Boeram Venter of Disco Bonsmaras from Kirkwood.

The delighted organiser, Paul Hobson, said 102 buyers had registered for the sale which saw all the bulls being sold out for the ninth successive year. There were also commercial females offered on the auction, bred by clients of Frontier Bonsmaras.

"These high quality cattle sold well, which bodes well for the future, as the female market is under pressure at the moment," Hobson said.
