Grahamstown Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the woman, in her late teens, was enjoying the view around 5.45pm as she stood on a footpath between Hooggenoeg and Andrew Haemro Road when she was accosted by an unknown man.
Govender said the man covered her mouth with one hand and placed a cloth over her eyes, before forcing her to lie in nearby bushes and raping her.
"He threatened that if she watched him leave he would harm her," Govender said. The man fled.
"The severely traumatised victim can only describe her assailant as a tall Xhosa-speaking male," Govender said.
