The newly-opened Sibanye Special Day Care Centre has appealed to the public for support. Having opened last week, the Centre desperately needs donations of paint, mattresses and child-sized desks and chairs for the children to work on.
The Centre is based at Samuel Ntlebi Primary School and aims to provide care for children with disabilities. One of the centre’s founding members, Nomalungisa Maloni, said the opening was the fulfilment of a long-held wish in Joza.
“We saw that both the parents [of special needs children]and the children themselves were suffering because they had no place to go during the day,” she said.
One of the difficulties parents with disabled children face is the struggle to hold down a job when there is no-one available to look after their children, Maloni said.
"The centre provides much-needed relief to parents and offers a stimulating and safe environment for their children.”
Although the centre is housed at a fee-paying school, it doesn’t currently have enough funds to buy everything that is needed. The centre needs equipment to help make the classrooms more child-friendly and educational.
