The former CFO of Ngqushwa Paul Mahlasela has been appointed to the position that has been vacant for almost a year since Danny Sahibdeen resigned. But DA councillor Les Reynolds says Council was never officially informed.
The provincial treasury office sent Busi Khumalo to act in the position until a permanent CFO is appointed. Khumalo will support the office of the CFO in Makana until the end of the year. Makana spokesperson Yoliswa Ramokolo confirmed the new CFO's appointment.
"Paul Mahlasela has been appointed in the position according to the new regulations for appointment of senior managers," Ramokolo told Grocott's Mail this week.
"We are just waiting for the office of the MEC to concur with his appointment and he can start." She said Council had been informed about the appointment. She said the position had first been given to Riaaz Lorgat from Cacadu District, but he had turned down the offer.
"The position was then given to Mr Mahlasela since he was the second person. He is from Ngqushwa Municipality and was holding the same position there," she said. Reynolds told Grocott's Mail he had heard at the Finance portfolio meeting about the appointment.
"We are supposed to know about these things as Council, but we were not informed about this one," Reynolds said. "If I were not in that committee I was not going to know about this.
"While the municipality is signing up new blood, others have resigned. Acting human resources manager Unathi Nondzube has resigned. The human resources manager position has been vacant since the suspension and dismissal of Pumla Qezu.
The Project Management Unit manager is also due to leave at the end of the month. Reynolds said councillors were worried that the staff morale in the municipality is very low, and the administration needed a shake-up.
"It has never been this bad really, the directors are not managing properly," he said.
